Is patagonia very cold this time of year?.

These things always sound more dramatic than they are.

When I went there the government was overthrown twice and we barely noticed, apart from the buses sometimes didn’t run for a couple of days as they were off blockading and overthrowing.

Go!.

I think a lot depends on how long you are staying. I volunteered for about a year in Bolivia, and they didn’t accept anyone that was staying for less than 6months, full time, precisely because of the ‘flitting’ reasons you were worried about.

Also, I think you can do good, but you have to be confident that you are the kind of person who actually will. Over there they find the idea of long term volunteering a bit strange, and will probably not actually ask you to do much. The point is you create ideas of what to do and initiate them yourself- you aren’t just bringing manpower to a situation, you are bringing a fresh perspective, some energy etc.

I would similarly say that volunteering is appreciated in terms other than the cash value of the work you do. Taking the time to actively participate in a community (making sure that is what you actually do, rather than crashing in with a dozen gap year kids and building a hut without speaking to anyone, before going back to your hostel etc.

[quote:1ca7783cb7="wildnomad"]Hi there,

I just spent a month in Colombia and thought the country was FANTASTIC. I work for an adventure travel company and had the pleasurable job of going out there to do some research to help put together some group trips, and ende up travelling through Bogota, Villa de Leyva, Zipaquira, Medellin, Manizales, Santa fe de Antioquia, Santa Marta, Tayrona and Cartagena - and the whole thing was simply amazing. I then took a group out there for a trip and they all agreed it was the best holiday they had ever been on - great people, fascinating stuff to see and do, good food, awesome scenery. If you want to see a copy of the itinerary log on to our website - it’s the English company Wild Frontiers or alternatively email me and I’ll send you a dossier about Colombia.
Definitely treat yourself, and go travel through Colombia!

Anyways, we’re looking for relatively cheap places to stay near the center.

Hello, if you are planning on visiting archaeological remains in Peru, I am sure Machupicchu is your priority but have to consider that other important places are located along the coast and the high jungle and they are the same importance as Macupicchu. Here is just an example of Late Archaic Period (3000-1500 BC) CARAL. This archaeological complex is located 4 hours northern from Lima, next time you visit this country, have this on mind.
Enjoy your trip in South america.
Mike.
